My 12 week old black lab/golden retriever is so smart really! We just started the targeting game. Shes amazing at the hand and sticky note is pretty good when its placed on my gamd and on something. Uses her nose. The minute i get that sticky note on the floor? She attacks it. She eats the paper. She wont even stay still to let me put it in the floor? Any recommendations? Thank u in advance!

Hello Sarahfryberg,

Welcome to the forums! Congrats in getting a new puppy.

There are two different ways to tackle an issue as such. One of them is to place the sticky note on the floor (when your pup is in another room or held on the leash by a helper or distracted with a treat tossed the opposite way as you attach it) and be extremely fast to click/treat before your pup has a chance to grab the sticky note. Click/treat for looking at it, then walking towards it, then just lowering the head, then either targeting with nose or paws. Rep after rep, your pup should learn that it's far more rewarding to just interact with the sticky note rather than attack it.

Does your puppy actually ingest the sticky note? or just grabs it and shreds it to pieces? If she actually eats it all or parts of it, you may want to use a different target. An alternate option is a target stick or a ruler or a wooden spoon.

Considering your puppy's tendency to eat things laying on the floor, it would be important to train leave it and drop it as outlined in the obedience section of course. Avoid practicing with items though that she may ingest for now.

Best,

Adrienne
