Grass eating

Oh its us again!! 🤣 sarah and piper! So we go outside for fetch and training... all she does is chomp on grass as fast as she can? I cant even get her attention with high end treats anymore! Its making it not fun.. i let her sniff around to roam do her thing as well. Just eats grass?

Hi Sarahfryberg,

Does your dog by any chances have a history of digestive issues? Just wondering, because generally speaking, dogs who eat grass very fast (you describe she eats as fast as she can!) and almost ravenously may do so instinctively to ease the discomfort of tummy upsets. This form of grass eating is different from the leisurely grass eating seen in dogs who are eating grass for the pleasure of it.

 

The leisure form of grass eating often entails dogs eating rather normally and even being selective, picking the most tender grasses. Dogs with GI upset instead are rather indiscriminate grass eaters, trying to gulp down as much as they can in one setting and eating even the rougher grasses which are known to irritate the throat and induce vomiting faster.

 

I am also wondering if this may be the case based also on the fact that she is preferring the grass to the high-end treats which it somewhat odd. Perhaps she feels nauseous to eat the treats? Does she ever drool/ smack her lips/lick surfaces before eating the grass or vomit/drool after eating the grass in such a way?
