I still contend they do.    This time it was Momo.

That little stinker managed to snag himself a treat today after his vaccinations.  I was in line with him and he had behaved the Entire time, leaving the rawhides and whatnot when told to.  As Soon as I was distracted that sneaky boy grabbed one of the treats they had next to the register.  (Dear Petsmart . . . clever placement, that's one way to drive sales! )  The gentleman behind us alerted me to it and thank Goodness Mo dropped the treat when I told him to.  That could have been a tricky situation.  I took the snack and placed it on the counter saying, "I guess I'm buying this!"  Smiles and chuckles all around.  Then I take out my card to pay and that opportunistic brat sits Beautifully, perks his ears, tilts his head, and gives me that kind of attention you see in every training video.  Everyone cracks up and awwwwwws.  Little do they know what a terror he can be, lol.  Not one of them would believe me if I told them of our past foibles.

That's funny!

When I worked for a vet hospital, we also kept treats nearby the register and made a lot of sales that way! As opportunists, dogs would just go for it, whether their owners were distracted or not. Some times an owner would approach me and tell me they were paying for a cookie. I would tell me to hand it to me so I could bag it and the owner would say: "It's too late, it's already been digested! LOL

We train lots of impulse control with people on walks, and pup is getting better

Loki sometimes doing some good sits+ stay, people are all "aaawwwwww" with his cute little fluffy face...

They just don't know the little rascal killed several of hoodies I like, and often make my head explode when barking non stop in the living room because he sees dogs on walks through the window 😂😂

We'll have to start at the preliminary, but at least this one seems easy enough :)

 

In his case, I think it's more the envy to go outside and play with people and other dogs rather than the answer to a threat or discomfort, as he's very social and nice to others

Usually I would let him bark outside and just ignore the behavior, but when that happens during the morning session, which is between 5am and 8am depending of his wake time, I can't let him bark outside or the neighborhood will hate us 

So I put him back in if it's too early. But I don't want to scold for barking, as it's a natural behavior and I don't really label it as "bad" so I play the "ignore behavior" card
But in a living room with some space, that echoes a bit, at 6am it's hard

I wish my old neighbors had be so conscientious!  When I lived in my beloved (now so very changed for the worst) Austin my neighbors would toss their two little yappers onto the balcony at 5 am.  They would bark until 7 am.  Mind you this is a 3' x 4' "balcony" so not very large at all.  I "may" have gotten to the end of my rope once and gone outside to yell, "take your dogs in," only it may not have been so polite.  🤬 After weeks of not getting those last precious hours of sleep enough was enough! 

So on behalf of your neighbors, thank you!

Back to the topic, though - Esther is a little rascal who keeps pilfering items.  Mo never did this as a puppy, which is interesting.  Gertie used to and finally grew out of it (usually my laundry or house shoes) and now Esther has taken up the mantle.  She's so good with "uh uh" and dropping and I'm appreciative of that.  Yesterday I had to trade her the chicken liver for the brush.  She's so skittish about new things, like she was locked in a room all day and was exposed to nothing before coming to our house.  So when I went to brush her she was like, "nope!"  I set the brush down for her to investigate and that little toot snatched it and ran around the yard with it.  Gah!  I'm out there in my gardening shoes, my night shirt, and it's raining.  Clearly I give no cares about what my neighbors think of my appearance because I went out there and was bargaining for the brush in exchange for chicken livers, lol.  She was giving me "that eye" like she was about to take off again so I threw the liver, but she didn't see it!  Gah again!  Shook the container once more and threw a piece of bark to the same place as the liver.  Bingo!  Retrieved my brush and dog and went inside.  The End.

I just arrived in the country and the village, and have really nice neighbors, I really dont wanna be "the foreigner who disturbs everyone" 😂

 

On a less fun note, at least you just shouted... I came from a place where most dogs sleep outside in their owners garden (tropics), and it's not unusual that a dog that disturbs the neighborhood too much gets a little gift thrown over the fence, like a juicy steak stuffed with rat poison 😟

 

Being nice to the neighbors is also a kind of protection

 

 

Btw, I pictured your story in my head and I must confess it put a smile on my face the way you described it 😄  still, I empathize, with a dog, it seems everyday can become an adventure 😄
