Leave it and take

I am working on leave it and take, and I am wondering do I give him the treat when I say take or wait 5 seconds then give him the treat?

I know it's a lot to go through, especially if you're ready as you're practicing, so I found the quote about take within the lesson:

Quote

The moment he gives up, click the clicker/use your verbal marker and open the hand from behind your back to him, say “take,” and let him eat the treats that were inside. The reason you give your dog the treats in your hand instead of the treat under your foot is because in a real-life scenario he might not be allowed to eat the item you asked him to leave—especially if it’s something harmful.

"Take" should be like an instant reward where "leave" is going to be more difficult to get the thing they want.  Dogs are opportunists and will do the least amount of work they can for a gain.

I should start practicing this more with Esther.  She's like a freaking Hoover vacuum.  Everything goes in her mouth and she's not growing out of the phase.
