CherylHampton Posted October 23, 2022 Posted October 23, 2022 Its been quite some time since I've posted, so many of you who read this probably haven't read some of my earlier posts when Shiloh had his challenges as a pup. I'm proud to say he worked through all of them and became the sweetest most well behaved dog I've ever had. Shiloh was a true gentleman, never aggressive, always entertaining and so content to just "be" I'm n close proximity to his people..Sadly, some soulless monster came through our area Monday tossing tainted meat into yard of people with pets and my precious Shiloh was a victim. I live in the country, have wonderful neighbors(even though they aren't close), and practically everyone in our area has pets, so I am not alone in my grief. I just wanted to take a minute and thank this group for all the support, helpful posts and topics that got Shiloh and me through some rough spots during his training as a young pup. Well, he was still a pup in my mind as he just turned two last month. My special ,quirky, protective, loving, silly, handsome Shiloh. I'm so broken over this I can't even begin to explain it. Hold your fur babies close and give them the unconditional love that they so freely give to you and consider yourselves blessed to have them. 1
Adrienne Farricelli Posted October 23, 2022 Posted October 23, 2022 Oh my, I wasn't expecting to read this. I had to read your post twice to let it sink in. When I saw your title I thought you went on vacation and had Shiloh boarded somewhere. This is so sad! What type of person could do something like this? Just going on a mass killing spree targeting peoples' pets like thar? I hope you and your neighbors find out who this person was and that something is done so that this doesn't happen again to others' pets. I am so sorry for your loss of sweet Shiloh. I will miss reading your posts about him and his silly antics. He was fortunate to have such a dedicated owner like you. It's so tough to lose them. I think our lives intertwine with them for many good reasons, like learning about love, life and its preciousness-and also its vulnerability- with the importance of savoring every moment. Sending you a huge, supportive hug at this tough time. RIP sweet, Shiloh
JMFS Posted October 23, 2022 Posted October 23, 2022 Oh, Cheryl, I'm so so so sorry! We lost a Beagle, Snoopy, this way when I was little. I lost Momo to something from the yard, and I was Not prepared for it. He was going to outlive us all with my dad, but they both moved on. Someone who does these things will get their comeuppance, I strongly believe in that - and I "put it out there in the universe," as my mom says. The disregard for life, and the level of cruelty, makes me spitting mad! Crossing my fingers someone has the miscreant on a camera so y'all can nail the person. I take comfort in knowing my dad is somewhere with our dogs, taking them hunting, throwing balls, long walks or runs with them, swimming, all the things dogs enjoy - dogs seemed to coexist with him as a matter of principle. Even Momo, the hyper never-out-of-energy pup, was a kindred spirit with my dad (and he wasn't always the easiest human to get along with - dogs saw through that gruff exterior). I've already sent him the head's up to look for Shiloh, and my best friend's Chester Copperpot, to ensure they're happy and well each and every day. 💕
ROGER SAUMURE Posted October 23, 2022 Posted October 23, 2022 Really sorry to hear this. I know first hand how heartbreaking this can be. Years ago we had a neighbor who indiscriminately (not in bait stations) used some rat poison and my terrier got into them. The vet diagnosed the problem but there was nothing he could do about it. Modern poisons attack the neurological system vs the old ones that eliminate the ability of blood to clot. Unfortunately there was no antidote for the newer type of poison. The vet advised us to put the dog down - or if we really wanted to try to save the dog to go to Cornell or Univ of Penn. We opted for Penn for logistics reasons - I was away on business and Penn was midway between home and DC. When my wife arrived at Penn our dog was as limp as a dishrag. The vets at Penn advised us to put him down. I got the vet to explain the mechanism of the poison to me and we decided on a course of treatment. We administered epilepsy drugs to keep the brain swelling down and gave him a IV of lipids to bind with the poison in his system. After 3 days of the treatment we were making the 3 hour drive to Penn to be with our dog when he was put down when the vet called and said he was showing some signs of improvement and maybe we should give it a little more time. We continued the drive to see our little dog and a few days he was back home. While he was never the same, and the road to recovery was long, he did live out the rest of his life to be over 15 years old. At the time I believe he was the only dog to survive this type of poisoning.
CherylHampton Posted October 25, 2022 Author Posted October 25, 2022 Thank you all for your kind words. Adrienne, you were there every step of the way for Shiloh and me, and I will be forever grateful. There's no doubt your support and this program is why Shiloh became the fine young canine he was. As I'm getting older Shiloh waa to be my last pet. I had to rehome my other dog when my husband became gravely ill, he wanted me to keep her but we only had her  few months and I simply couldn't devote the time to her she deserved. It took me two years to make a decision to get another one and my Shiloh filled my heart with who much joy and love. I know all our pets are unique and have their own personalities, he was one in a million. Thanks again, good luck with your program you seem to be doing well. I'd like to think I would have use of it again, but fear I will be far to old before my heart will be ready again.😞
Adrienne Farricelli Posted October 29, 2022 Posted October 29, 2022 Cheryl, thank you for all the kind words. Shiloh was very lucky to have you and you did such a wonderful job with him. I hope all the good memories will help you through this difficult time. My heart goes out to you. Feel free to post anytime you feel like it, we're always here for support. Best, Adrienne Â
