I came from a place where most dogs sleep outside in their owners garden (tropics), and it's not unusual that a dog that disturbs the neighborhood too much gets a little gift thrown over the fence, like a juicy steak stuffed with rat poison 😟 Being nice to the neighbors is also a kind of protection Btw, I pictured your story in my head and I must confess it put a smile on my face the way you described it 😄 still, I empathize, with a dog, it seems everyday can become an adventure 😄

Little glimpse of hope here : this morning has been a bit tough... really low energy, not much up for anything... I guess the night was really bad, if he even slept at all He must have been on an upset stomach all the time, trying to contain it... poor buddy He finally ate breakfast in Kong + in Muffin game. Tried to tug on clothes a bit, but finally made on some on toys. He got a super chew and start crashing in the living room. We skipped the morning walk, and put in directly into crate with open pen, and while he starting the nap in the pen, he now settled in the crate. (I finally used baking soda to finish cleaning the crate as I read it's a natural odor remover) That's a little hope for me in the sense that it hasn't traumatized him of the crate, and didn't kill the good training he had with it so far

We'll have to start at the preliminary, but at least this one seems easy enough :) In his case, I think it's more the envy to go outside and play with people and other dogs rather than the answer to a threat or discomfort, as he's very social and nice to others Usually I would let him bark outside and just ignore the behavior, but when that happens during the morning session, which is between 5am and 8am depending of his wake time, I can't let him bark outside or the neighborhood will hate us So I put him back in if it's too early. But I don't want to scold for barking, as it's a natural behavior and I don't really label it as "bad" so I play the "ignore behavior" card But in a living room with some space, that echoes a bit, at 6am it's hard I'm sure we'll benefit from this. I'm on a row with bad episode Yesterday, little error, he went to bed for the night with access to the pen. While he usually goes from 22pm to at least 5am, he made a tantrum at 2am, in the pen, jumping on the fence, whining... I got down, opened while thinking there could be a need, put him out with no fuss, no look, he had a pee, we went back, in the crate, and closed the pen access Tantrum and whining quite while he usually had no problem with the crate but as we just went out, I played the ignore card... Finally settled after quite some time, whining again 2 hours after. Ignored again, settled, and last whine was at wake up time Potty time... And he pooped... While he never poop first thing in the morning.. besides it finished liquid... I had a bad feeling about this... There was indeed a poop accident in the crate... He never pooped at night so I didn't even considered that would be his call... I just thought of excitment with the pen access open and the pee he actually made Will that provoque a setback in crate training ? And pooping in there made a négative association ? How do I proceed from here ? Or it's ok and will get back to normal ? I cleaned with just water. In house accident I also use white vinegar but didn't want to put some in the crate as I used it for the repulsive effect Will water cleaning be enough ? Poor guy should have had an horrible night. He didn't touch his breakfast Kong and fall asleep in the middle of the living room He had a vaccines booster shot friday but was totally fine saturday and sunday... So I dont think of this to be the issue... Too much fruits as treats can provoke liquid stools and higher poop frequency ? Thank you for the help

Perhaps it was from a sick beast, perhaps it was rotten... I swear I try my best, but in a "wild" / "natural" environment, like forest, or farmer's field, it's not that easy to be 100% bullet proof Big herbs, stack of leaves, little holes in a tree, so many places they can find unwanted things where I can't have control beforehand Besides if walks becomes just a source of stress and hyper vigilance, I'm sure they will sense it and that would become an issue also About the management part, i'll try to be even more careful, but I'm not sure I can come to 0 risk, but now I take the liver paste with me on walks for emergencies. It worked for trading animal poop (which is weirdly high value to pup), and also on chestnut, so I have good hopes About the "accident", I guess it's too late now. On the same walk, I tried to do easy training to give me an excuse to give him treats. We manage to do more training now during walks... He even managed some "leave it" on horse poop I have been the taker this one time, I hope this does not take over the balance of me being a giver the rest of the time

Humm... It's sad We took the car crate out of the car to do crate training on this specific crate to create positive association with the crate itself before putting it back in the car It was obvious at first there was an issue : it put just 2 paws in and were out just after... But with luring with treats, giving the edible chew in this crate, putting new toys in there when he does not see, we seem to get better result : he now even get in himself with all 4 paws (likely to check if there's a treat or toy, but that's still progress) I was really hoping to be able to do something... But motion sickness is a médical issue, not a behavior thing, or at least something you can control with training I didn't want to arrive to the point of medication... my Mum has motion sickness, and it does not get any better the more we take the car... We'll go on with training for shorter distance and at least avoid feeding him before, but maybe medication for the bigger trips would be needed Thank you

Haha I can relate to that We train lots of impulse control with people on walks, and pup is getting better Loki sometimes doing some good sits+ stay, people are all "aaawwwwww" with his cute little fluffy face... They just don't know the little rascal killed several of hoodies I like, and often make my head explode when barking non stop in the living room because he sees dogs on walks through the window 😂😂

Thank you for the sharing It shows how dogs are such wonderful créatures, and that even if you messed up at some point, the willingness to do good and reacting accordingly will prevail and gives you and your dog a good life As my pup is so young, and building himself, I'm often afraid that one mistake, or one slip on my part will mess him up for the rest of his life. I may underestimate their resiliency I think the liver paste has some potential. Last walk he got a sheep poop... Nothing dangerous here, but he happens to lick our face sometimes (normally off limits, but can happens when he's in our arm), and we don't want to mix licking our faces with any kind of poop 😂😂 Put a little liver paste on my finger, and offered it with asking a drop, and that worked... Sheep poop maybe not as valuable as fresh chicken leg, but it's encouraging Kind regards

Thank you for all the advice We'll go on with the baby steps We also do some very short to the forest up our house just to make a little car trip that finish to a nice place / moment Unfortunately I'm not sure we'll be able to do a full training baby steps... He often has to go to the vet for vaccines lately, and in a few weeks, we have quite a big trip to see family Can this type of scenario just "cancel" the effort ? I mean, we'll try baby steps, but worst case scenario, next vet trip he vomits again, will it be a huge drawback ? Or what is acquired should be pretty solid ? This subject is awfully tricky. Painful experience today : we were in an authorized farmer area, with a big field. In high herbs, way impossible for me to see beforehand, he got a fresh chicken leg, I guess a drop by the farmer... He stopped and chew on that during several minutes... Nothing did matter anymore. I try a recall, nothing... We try running away with crazy noises, nothing... I tried approaching and trade with treats, nothing, not high value enough against an unprocessed chicken leg... And when I tried to approach the mouth, he turned away and even growled on me I have to admit I saw no other way around, and after several minutes of trying and waiting... I forced it out, while he was dodging and growling... I gave treats after, then did some sits with big treats reward to try to compensate for being the bad guy just before I felt bad after, (and actually still does), but I felt really stuck there as he seemed to have found the holy grail and I forced it out Among our treat, I'm not even sure about one that can compete... The paste of his lick mat perhaps... After this bad event, is there anything I should do ? Rework some trust building with some hand feeding ? Or what's done is done, s**t happens, nobody was killed and I'll just to add that as an expérience to be even more careful and bring the liver paste ? he never growl at me in a non playing way before... That hurts more than the puppy biting 😅

Used the frozen washrag advice I cut the sleeves of an old tshirt, tied in knots, watered them, and go in the freezer He seems to like to chew on it Good thing with 2 sleeves is I can alternate : while he chews on one, the other is in the freezer, preparing to be next It looks like a perfect cheap efficient chew We'll see how it goes Thank for the great advice

I'm opening this thread about a subject that didn't seem critical to us, but that can be a little annoying Our pup is really afraid in the car We have a transportable crate that we put on the back seat When we got him, we went on a several days road trip, because the breeder was very far. He usually whines and cries at the beginning, but settles once in the highway. I figured it would be the acceleration and turns that bothered him, but long straight lines were ok During this road trip, we used this crate also as his sleeping crate in people house while on the road, and he seems kinda ok with that Lately (that means several weeks after we finally settled at home), we used the car for vet appointment, or other obligations, and didn't make much training of it. Vomiting in the car started, and it seems anxiety spiked. We had whining and crying almost for every trip the whole time We try to start from the beginning : - put him in the car, start the engine, engine off, that's it. Rinse and repeat - then put him in the car, start the engine, advance a little, back a little, rinse and repeat - then a few minutes trip... Little progress at some point, but not much on bigger trip. For example, today was vet appointment. Longer trip + heat ==> vomit in the car We cleaned the crate, and tried some crate training on this specific crate outside of the car, and bad thing is that he seems afraid of this crate now. He does not go full in. We tossed treats in it, just put 2 paws, took the treats, and went out From this story, how do you think we should proceed ? - start to reengage trust in the crate with training outside of the car ? - force car training with the crate inside: with no ignition first, then ignition and no move, then little moves, then longer moves - or car tolerance comes with age ? I may have read that internal ear builds with age, so they support cars way better with age We have really nice place around to go to. Now, we are forcing it, and have a pup that whine until we get at destination... but we would be happier if he would enjoy the car a little

We definitely did that : my gf and I were each on one side of the yard with a yummy treat One would call "come"... we learn at puppy school that "come" has a meaning only if he comes close enough so you can grab the collar... so we grad the collar at come then the other one call a "come" from the other side, grab the collar, reward... rinse and repeat hope next week we'll be a little less ashamed thanks to that (just kidding, we're proud of him, and even the instructor said Finnish Lapphound are kinda stubborn and independant)

Forgot this part, and still could not edit : On another topic : we want to classes. It was so nice, and so short, specially as they quite some time of free play between pups He made us ashamed 2 times : - he was the only one humping other pups :) - during the recall exercise, he was the only one that failed it... I'm reassuring myself, thinking he was the oldest, thus the only one in the "flight period" and a little more independant :) He started to come to me on the "come when called", and mid-way went straight to a ball on the side Was really nice though, and he was exhaaauuussstted after. Will redo next week, and try on his recall meanwhile :)

Anyway, this morning I almost avoided any sleeves attack, and it seems the chewing tweak helped. We went potty, chill, little soft play on toys, breakfast, CHEW + coffee for me, between 20-30 mins, then play / games, and it went really better on his energy levels Although I said almost as I made a mistake : I was low during a fetch to make him come back, he went on to me as if he wanted to snuggle, coming in my arms.. he really has under threshold energy level, so I really thought he wanted so I started to pet, and boooom it was a diversion from the little rascal that went for the sleeve after that But ball was close, so I could redirect quite easily... The fact that the redirection were kinda efficient really make me think it was just attention seeking this time, certainly thanks to the fact he has depleted his chewing needs before. Sneaky pup ! Hello Wanted to share this one and have little remarks / questions on it : - I like his stay ("attends in French") and go, specially as this game is high value to him - he goes with paw. is it ok because he thinks and finds a solution ? or it defies the purpose of the game, and prevent good preparation for the "tidy up" game ? - should I try to make him go with the mouth ? If yes, how ? he has a solution that works, I'm not sure he'd like to bother with finding something else :D :D - I started to use that as an alternative to the Kong when I want to feed him and as he doesn't take from the bowl much now Kind regards

"He shouldn't be seeing treats in plain view. They should be in your treat bag or pocket or at least behind your back" I may need to do something on that. It's not really in plain sight per say, but I'm pretty sure he understands when I get in the fridge to get the little blue box, it's treats for him and training is coming. I'll try to be less obvious I dont do much reward with toys. Either it's something new or what I find not easy, otherwise it's mainly praise Only case I could think of toys as reward is when we try "Jazz up and settle down" I'll definitely try the tweak in schedule, and also the Frozen stuff (rags and fruits) thanks again

I didn't think much about praising the Kong of the Lick-mat, while I learned to do it on chew toys like "yes Loki ! we like when you chew on your rubber chicken" (and not on our furniture :)) We are now trying to enforced naps in crate but with access to the playpen. I didn't want to do that at first because I was afraid he wouldn't settle in the playpen as he would do in a closed crate, but I was even more afraid that he would not call us from the crate and would just stay in it alone and depressed while waiting for someone to take care of him finally With access to the playpen, which contains some toys, the cow hoof, I'm more confident that if he's awake, he would go chew on the hoof or on the rubber chicken, and if he's sleeping, he's really sleeping, and not just lying down alone and depressed. He made some quite long naps lately that had me worried (even if I know you replied to me to sleep him, because of the potential growth spikes :) I'm sorry I'm just anxious by nature :)) : like 4h30, and actually I cracked and opened the crate, and I'm pretty sure I woke him up I'd feel less remorse to let him a little more alone to go on with my stuff, if he has access to the playpen with toys and chews First time this morning, after the walk, he went in, got asleep without touching the toys and hoof. Got asleep in the pen btw, not in the crate... maybe the floor is more fresh... Btw, he have 2 days of heat spike, which concurred with his gigantic naps. With Loki big fur, could this make him tired and sleepy during the whole day, and more in shape at the end of the day when the sun start to set ? He was way more energetic in the end of day

My first instinct was just to put a toy in front of his nose when I sense the "hunter mode" but you gave many possibilities that would help variation and avoid boredom I guess About his training, it's mostly ok in home environment without much stimuli. He has a good sit, a way better stay now (in both distance and duration), leave it at home is even not that bad (even with high value treat like chicken). Drop it is a hard one, I guess it's because the thing he has to drop is usually high value and exiting, but I feel like when he lets go it's more random to adapt his grasp than a real response to the cue Outside, it's way harder, but we're kinda happy with the progress. Impulse control when people passes is way better, we sometimes get some sit, he still pulls a little but he's no more crazy and jumping everywhere. We have better "followed walk" (he's on long leash during walks), with many more eyes checks. We even have some good recalls (about 15m I'd say, longer than the leash that we drop down at some point when not much stimuli around) I don't know if we should be proud or worried, but for less than 4 months, we're quite happy (now that I've changed my mindset also, passing the worst of the puppy blues :)), imho it's still so young. Not much for the state he is right now, but for the progress we've seen. The better stay, the better impulse control during walks... Besides we will attend puppy school starting tonight, we'll see what the instructor will say The poop taking was just an example. He also occurs when I'll take his toys in the yard. This morning, I got another hole this way : 7am, he was lying down on his mat, and I'd say to myself "ok, nice, a little cooling time, lets take advantage of it", and I went lie down on the sofa. Two secs later, pup went rushing to get on also, so I try a "get down / four on floor" with the hand signal... Big mistake, it gave access to my sleeve, which he took and tugged directly, and I had to drag a croco-pup to reach for a toy. I may have notice something, and perhap you may help me clarify, or tell if it makes sense. I notice the morning he's quite excited. I guess the night, the absence, the 8 hours in the crate, he has much accumulated energy. But he doesn't fetch much, doesn't tug much... he would agree with some training, but if he sees I have treats, but in excited way, maybe even overthreshold... I mean, he respond quite well to the cue, specially inside the house, but I feel the excitement when getting the treat, or the impatience when we try some longer stay... In the end after about 1 hour of mixing little spurs of mental / physical / training, the excitment is still there, and I see no sign of tireness Then he got a chew for me to get my coffee (with me this time, not in the pen) (chew was a buffalo neck tendon, I'll check with the vet, but this one is supposed to be on the safe side)... and magic happened : he gnawned on it almost 30 mins, and he seemed like another puppy just after My question about this "discovery" is : can the need to gnaw / chew at his age could be a "primary need" that need to be address almost like feeding ? I'm wondering about teething. If teething is unconfortable for him, could the excitment + no-willingness to engage under threshold in any activities , just be the consequence of him having a desperate need to gnaw to relieve / soothe what's happening in his mouth ? If that's relevant, perhaps should I tweak a little the morning routine and make : Wake up, chill time, breakfast, potty, CHEW / GNAW, and only then to try engaging other activities like physical / mental / training ? I don't know if it makes any sense at all, because he has a rubber chicken on which he sometimes chew or a cow hoof accessible also, but I really tend to remark that after a good session of gwaning, the energy level is more adequate for anything

Thank you for your answers and your help, both Adrienne and Jennifer I was pretty sure the cooked chicken and apple was like value amongst the highest but the real world proved me wrong Problem with learned is that it's tough to know beforehand. When "leave it" worked with cooked chicken at home, I was hoping at least to have a minimum during walks, but it's like the difficulty is multiplied by 100 and the focus on us is divided by 100 😂 and we ended up with several cues repeated in the void Anyway you must be right about environment control. As the area around is really nice, we sometimes walk a little casually (never with the phone, we want walks to be a special time with us and pup), even giving him some freedom using a long leash... We don't want walks to be only restrictive, but we'll sure try to put a better scanner eye
