  1. We have been doing better on walks and Finn is able to pass by dogs that are fenced in without going crazy.. I use the vibration and give him rewards when he acts calm. However today was a disaster. We just came home from a walk and were going into our apartment when the little female dog was going towards her apartment. She was not on a leash but the owners were with her. I thought that finn did okay with female dogs.. However he immediately attacked her, I don't see how I am going to be able to cope with this behavior and there is not trainer here in Salmon What should I do. I have a line outside the apartment in the back . MAybe he is not a dog that I should walk.
  2. Thanks I needed that advice about using the shock function. So far I have used the vibration function and given treats when I use it. I thought I might have to use the shock function when there is a unleashed dog approaching but now I won't I will use the u turn. I think I am ready to take Finn to the park where dogs are suppose to be on leash. I think I will have time to u turn there if an unleashed dog approaches. I plan to take Finn off to the side of the path and make him sit using the vibration function and treats as a leashed dog goes by. I keep reminding myself baby steps baby steps!
  3. I Haven't chatted for a while . Finn is doing better with his aggression issues. Thanks to your advice we have done baby steps . I did get a shock collar for as there are too many loose dogs around for him and me to be safe. As it is I have only used the vibration part and it seems to be working . We have walked by several dogs and Finn has just looked quietly instead of going crazy I will not go to the dog park yet and probably won't ever go there. There is a park where dogs are supposed to be walked on a leash . A lot of people disregard this but at least it is a quiet place . We will see how it goes. I don't know what I would have done without your advice.
  4. thanks for the advice I like the idea of my walking a calm dog and letting another person walk mine
  5. I really wish there was a dog trainer here in Salmon Idaho I try to take walking routes where Finn is not exposed to dogs .However there are several dogs in the apartment complex that are a;;owed to run free including the managers daughter: Yesterday they were out when I tried to walk Finn and as usual he went crazy as the dogs approached him. I do have a taser which makes a loud bang and that stopped them so I could move on. Last night I had a friend who has a female collie and she invited Finn and me to the dog park, She told me no other dogs were there. I went and she had her collie and another little male dog that she walks. As soon as I opened the door and let Finn out he attacked the little male dog. Thus a fight and I used my taser to break them up. The little dog ran home and then Finn was fine with the female. I love walking with Finn but I am frustrated and don't know what to do ,Would a shock collar be useful
  6. I enjoyed reading your thread. I have a dog that is aggressive on the leash, We went to the dog park once and he did okay off leash but I am just to nervous to not have control . I do worry that he does not have a chance to socialize with other dogs because he is always on the leash. Unfortunately there are no dog trainers to help me not to be nervous around other dogs . I know it isn't Finn that's the problem its me. I love Finn and I love being alone with him but I worry that I am not being fair.
  7. I am still working out the aggression issue when we walk I have bought a muzzle but haven't used it yet on walks. What happens if an unleashed dog approaches and Finn has the muzzle on . Another question, When I first got Finn we had a coffee club which a couple of dogs came with their owners for coffee. Finn off leash did well with the other two dogs. We have not had coffee club for a couple of months now so Finn has not had the opportunity to be with another dog off leash. Will he remember to not be aggressive if I have him meet another dog off leash
  8. Still trying to work with aggression when on a leash, One of my friends suggested that I take Finn to the dog park so he can be with other dogs off leash. Is this a good idea. I have to confess that I am very nervous about dog parks so that doesn't help matters
  9. I think I will try for a dog proof waste basket! THanks
  10. Every time I leave my dog raids the wastebasket How do I stop this
  11. I will work on lowering the threshold I know it is my behavior he senses when we go by another dog so I need to lower my threshold too! Is a muzzle appropriate to use at any time
  12. I am having a difficult time walking my dog if there are other dogs around. He is on a leash but will attack and bark no matter what I do. I have been using the sh sh word and giving treats when he even attempts to be quite. However that's not work, My dog was rescued from a home that had six dogs and he was sent to another home because he couldn't cope .Finn is a poodle mix and very smart. when we walk where there are no dogs he I great and he is wonderful in the house. Any ideas what I can do
