TracyRice Posted May 31, 2020 Posted May 31, 2020 We adopted a dog from Metro animal services. She was abused before we got her. We have started the preschool training. She Is scared to death of the clicker. What should we do?
Adrienne Posted June 1, 2020 Posted June 1, 2020 Hi there! Welcome to the forums! There are several ways around using a clicker if your dog finds its sound aversive. Many use the clicker in their pockets to muffle the sound, but if she is scared of death to it, you can replace its sound with a verbal marker (yes!) or any virtually any other short word that is used exclusively for the purpose. You can also use a sound made with your mouth as long as you can easily make it often and keep it consistent. Alternatively, you can use a retractable pen that clicks. Make sure to use high value treats to create strong positive associations especially during the charging process.
